경섭이 집에서 나오다가 버스 안에서 심심 할 것 같아 빌려간다며 책 한권을 들고나왔다. 읽어 본다고 하면서 미뤘던 책이었다.

"만일 그래다 어느 연금술 실험실에 있는 거라면, 아마도 지금이 에메랄드 판을 연구하기에 가장 적저한 순간일 것이네. 하지만 그대는 지금 사막에 있으니, 차라리 사막 속에 깊이 잠겨보게. 사막이 그대에게 깨달음을 줄 걸세. 사실 이 땅 위에 있는 거라면 무엇이든 그대에게 깨달음을 주겠지만 말이지. 사막을 이해하려고 할 필요는 없네. 모래 알갱이 하나를 들여다보기만 해도, 마음 속에서 천지창조의 모든 경이를 볼 수 있을 것이니." p208

스페인 양치기인 산티아고가 보물을 찾는 꿈을 꾼다. 그 보물은 이집트의 피라미드에 있고 그것을 찾기 위해 여행한다. 여행중 경험하고 그 가운데 진리들을 발견한다.
마지막 보물이 무엇일까 궁금하여 늦은 밤 들어와 읽고 잤다. 생각하고 행동하지 않았다면 얻지 못했을것이다.

행동하고 감사하라. 지금의 환경에 적응하고 내가 살아 온 환경과 다르다하여 불평하며 시간이 보내지 마라. 어떤 일이든 그곳에서 배울 수 있는 점이 있다. 마음 먹었다면 행동하라.
